Blog72: Green Tea: Myths and Facts

Green tea is one of the most popular beverages in the world. Its use begins thousands of years ago in China and gradually, thanks to its health benefits, it spread throughout the world. Green tea has been used in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine. Weight loss, cardiovascular benefits, cancer prevention and much more are heard around green tea. I am going to pinpoint some of the myths and facts about green tea, so when you are bragging about it to your friends and family, at least, you have the right information.
#Myth 1:Green tea and black tea are extracted from different plants.
Fact: This myth doesn’t exactly have any impact on your health, but it doesn’t hurt to know the truth. Although green tea is high and mighty compared to the black tea, most people believe that green tea is never even in the shadow of black tea or any other kinds of tea for that matter. People believe every tea plant is different. In reality, there is only one plant or a shrub that’s used to prepare tea. Leaves and leaf buds of the plant Camellia Sinensis is used to prepare various kinds of tea. It’s really all the same until processed. The variation in color is due to different methods of processing.
#Myth 2: Drinking Green tea burns belly fat.
Fact: Sadly, this one's super-false. Any time you change your diet to start a new plan in which you burn more energy than you consume, you'll likely "burn" off some additional fat mass (for many of us, that's stored around the tummy area, so you may notice a little tightening-up!). That said, no one food or drink can "spot train" any body parts! Keep in mind that green tea beverages (like sugary lattes, sparkling green teas with added sugar, and green tea "flavored" drinks) are often still sugary beverages, which has been linked both to weight gain over time (specifically, abdominal fat), so just make sure that you're choosing versions with "0g" (zero gram) of sugar and "0 calories" (zero calories) per serving.
#Myth 3: Green tea boosts metabolism.
Fact: Again, we wish! While a few small-scale studies have linked an increased metabolic rate to drinking green tea (when sipping about four caffeinated cups per day!), the only truly variable factor in your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is increasing your lean body mass, a.k.a. building muscle. That's why strength training is key to keeping your metabolism up for the long-term, and crucial to bone, muscle and immune function, which ultimately helps to support metabolism over time. The only real, tried-and-true way drinking green tea will help boost your metabolism.
#Myth 4: Green tea causes dehydration.
FactCaffeine causes dehydration, which is a known fact. This has given the idea to people that every beverage with caffeine causes dehydration. This of course is a greatly exaggerated concept. You would have to drink extremely strong cup of tea to feel dehydrated, and that too still wouldn’t do it because of the amount of liquid present in the water. It’s just another myth that has been circulating for no reason.
#Myth 5: Green tea detoxifies blood.
FactYour body does a great job of detoxifying itself because your kidneys and liver do a good job of filtering out the bad stuff. The greatest detox that you can give your body is hydration. Water! Yes, there is nothing that compares to the detoxifying effects of water on the human body. Green tea doesn’t even come close.
#Myth 6: Green tea fights cancer.
Fact: Green tea contains antioxidants known for their cancer-fighting benefits, but these antioxidants aren’t unique to green tea. Eating a plant-based diet rich in fruits and vegetables can net you the same benefits as drinking green tea.
There are lots of benefits in green tea, no doubt. But, if you lead a sedentary or moderately active life, and are expecting your cups of green tea to bring about miraculous weight loss results, think again.
